ntfy · Nimbox SRE alerts on your phone

The ntfy channel sends Nimbox SRE alerts to Android or iPhone without requiring another account. Each person gets an individual subscription that can be revoked without affecting the rest of the team.

Notifications include the host, detected problem, priority, and shortcuts to open the incident or view the host in the console.

1. Install ntfy

No ntfy account is required

Nimbox SRE issues an individual subscription. Never enter your Nimbox SRE console credentials in the app.

2. Issue a subscription

  1. Sign in to the Nimbox SRE console.
  2. Open Agent → ntfy.
  3. Enable Deliver alerts through this channel and save.
  4. Under Subscription addresses, enter its owner —for example, “Aitor”, “on-call”, or “support phone”— and select Issue.

The console displays:

ntfy field Value
Server The address shown by Nimbox SRE, for example https://app.nimboxsre.com
Topic The personal token beginning with nba_

Use Copy topic to avoid transcription errors.

3. Add it to the app

  1. Open ntfy and tap +.
  2. Paste the nba_… token generated by Nimbox SRE into Topic name.
  3. Enable Use another server.
  4. Enter https://app.nimboxsre.com, or copy Server for the app from the console.
  5. Tap Subscribe.

The server remains visible in Agent → ntfy next to Copy server, even when no topic has just been issued or revealed.

The topic is a read credential

Anyone holding it can receive that company's alerts. Do not share it in group chats or reuse it for several people. Issue one per device or responsible person.

Give it a clear name on Android

Open the subscription, select ⋮ → Rename, and use a name such as “Nimbox SRE” or the company name. This only changes its display name on the phone.

Reveal or copy the topic again

In Agent → ntfy, locate the subscription and select Show. Reveals are recorded in the audit log and require channel-management permission.

Older subscriptions

Subscriptions issued before topic recovery was introduced only retain their cryptographic hash. Issue a new one and revoke the old address.

Revoke a subscription

Select Revoke when a phone is lost or replaced, a person leaves the team, the topic was exposed, or the subscription is no longer used. Only that address stops working.

What a notification contains

  • incident reference and affected host;
  • problem description and verification guidance;
  • priority and Nimbox SRE icon;
  • Open incident button;
  • View host button when applicable.

These buttons open the console and follow its normal permissions. The ntfy topic cannot sign in to the dashboard or modify incidents.

Troubleshooting

  • No alerts: check that Use another server is enabled, the server is https://app.nimboxsre.com, the topic begins with nba_, the address is not revoked, and ntfy has notification and battery permissions.
  • Long subscription name: rename it in the Android app.
  • Show cannot recover it: issue a new address; the old one predates recoverable topics.
  • Lost phone or exposed topic: revoke it immediately and issue a replacement. Other subscriptions are unaffected.
